The Origin of Cocktails

People say cocktails were first created in the United States in the 19th century, when people enjoyed mixing different drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, resulting in colorful blends that looked like a rooster’s tail (since cock means rooster and tail means tail).

According to the book “How to Mix Drinks; or, The Bon Vivant’s Companion,” the first cocktail makers were called bartenders. As cocktails evolved and the mixtures became more diverse, the experts who crafted them became known as mixologists.

What Goes Into a Cocktail

A cocktail usually blends several ingredients in one glass, such as alcohol (vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whiskey), mixers (soda, juice, tonic), flavor enhancers (syrup, bitters, herbs), and garnishes (orange, cherry, mint leaves). All of these create a rich and complex taste.

Even though cocktails use many ingredients, mixologist usually classify them by the main alcohol used:

– Gin
The Bronx, Gibson, Blue Lady

– Brandy
Banana Bliss, Stinger, Sidecar

– Whiskey
Blackjack, Manhattan Dry, Old Nick

– Vodka
Bloody Mary, Blue Lagoon, Moscow Mule

– Tequila
Margarita, Sunrise, Mockingbird

There are also several popular cocktails, each with its own unique character that attracts drink lovers. Curious to know what they are? Check them out here, who knows you might find your new favorite!

When making a cocktail, a mixologist carefully measures every ingredient to create a balanced flavor and an appealing presentation. Since cocktails contain alcohol, they’re made for guests aged 21+. Their alcohol content is also fairly strong, usually around 10–30%. So remember to drink responsibly!

The History of Mocktails

Mocktails first appeared in the United States in the 1920s, during the era when alcoholic drinks were banned. Bartenders began experimenting with juices, spices, and fruit syrups to create drinks that resembled cocktails. The word “mock” meaning “imitation” highlights that these drinks were made as non-alcoholic versions of cocktails.

Their fresh taste, non-alcoholic nature making them enjoyable for everyone and the growing awareness to choose drinks that are both delicious and better for the body have all contributed to mocktails becoming increasingly popular.

What Goes Into a Mocktail

Like cocktails, mocktails are often categorized by their main ingredients:

– Fizzy (juice, soda, tonic)
Virgin Mojito, Shirley Temple

– Fruity & Creamy (juice, cream, yogurt)
Watermelon Agua Fresca, Fruit Punch Mocktail, Blood Orange Spritzer

– Herbal & Spiced (ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, tea)
Ginger Basil Grapefruit Spritzer, Spring Thyme Lemonade, Lemon, Ginger & Lavender Hot Toddy

Even though mocktails are less complex than cocktails, making a good one still requires precision and skill to keep the flavor fresh, light, and fruity. A mixologist must know how to combine fruits and spices correctly to create a sensation similar to an alcoholic drink.

So, Which One Will You Choose?

Now that you know the difference, have you decided between a cocktail or a mocktail? If not, here are some tips:

– Choose a cocktail if you want a bold drink with complex flavors (bitter, sweet, and sour) with alcohol and a garnish of fruit or spices.

– Go for a mocktail if you prefer something fresh, light, sweet, non-alcoholic, and still beautifully presented.
