Many people still don’t fully understand the difference between Wine and Spirit. Here’s the explanation:
What is Wine?
Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of grapes. The production of this drink requires a natural chemical balance in the grapes without the addition of sugar, acid, enzymes, or other nutrients. One of the processes involved is fermentation in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels, where yeast converts the sugars into alcohol.
Each type of grape has its own distinct flavor characteristics. Climate and soil types also affect the taste of the wine, along with viticulture practices, the grape production process, and even the storage and aging of the grapes, all of which play a role in the final product. The types of grapes used include black, white, and red grapes, but other fruits like cherries and berries can also be used.
Wine typically has an alcohol content (ABV) of around 8% – 15%, which is lower than that of Spirits. Variations include Red, White, Rosé, Sparkling, and Dessert.
This drink is usually enjoyed and served in a glass during dinner. Its use is not limited to just drinking; it can also be used as a flavoring agent or in the preparation of sauces, such as wine reduction for steak or red wine sauce for beef Wellington.
What is Spirits?
Spirits is an alcoholic drink produced through a distillation process. The term “Spirit” is derived from the alcohol itself, which is a clear liquid produced during this process. The word “Spirit” comes from the Latin word “spiritus,” meaning “breath,” which refers to the vapor released during the distillation process. This drink is intended to be consumed in small amounts.
Spirits have a much higher alcohol content compared to Wine, typically ranging from 40% to 60% ABV, or even higher. The distillation process concentrates the alcohol, making it much stronger than Wine.
Spirits come in a variety of types and flavors, each with its unique characteristics. Common types of spirits include Vodka, Rum, Gin, Tequila, Brandy, and Whiskey. The flavor of a Spirit is influenced by the choice of raw materials, aging processes, and any added flavorings. The longer the aging process, the smoother the taste becomes.
These drinks are typically enjoyed on the rocks or mixed with various other alcoholic beverages. Spirits are used as mixers in cocktails like Mojito, Margarita, or Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail.
