What is Mixology?

Have you ever come across drinks like Verry Berry Mojito or Beauty Tipsy? The creation of these drinks requires special skills. Mixology is the art of combining various types of beverages to create unique drink creations. This blending requires a creative approach to both the taste and the appearance of the drink.

The History of Mixology

  • 17th Century: Mixology has its historical roots in this era when simple mixed drinks like punch became popular among English and Dutch sailors.
  • 18th Century: During this time, punch became extremely popular. The ingredients for making punch typically included alcoholic beverages like rum, sugar, oranges, water, and spices. This type of drink served as the backdrop for the creation of cocktails, thanks to the unique flavor and preparation process. In 1862, the father of mixology, Jerry Thomas, published “The Bartender’s Guide,” which became a pioneering work in the art of drink mixing.
  • 19th Century: The term “Mixology” first appeared in the United States during this era. The process of mixing encouraged bartenders to become more creative, especially due to alcohol prohibition in the United States. This blending of ingredients with simple flavors helped mask the taste of illegal alcohol. As a result, bartenders continued to refine their skills to create more complex drinks.
  • 2000 – Present: In this era, mixologists are no longer just regular bartenders; they are individuals capable of adding new ambiance, flavor, and presentation to ordinary drinks. Techniques Used in Drink Mixing.

Some of the Mixologist Techniques:

Shaking: A technique used to mix liquid ingredients with ice to cool them and create a smooth consistency.

Muddling: A technique used to mix ingredients without introducing too much air. It is usually applied in cocktails like the Martini.

Blending: A technique for mixing desired ingredients using a blender.

Infusing: A method for soaking fruits in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Rimming: Adding extra flavor to the rim of a glass, usually by wetting it with lime extract and then coating it with sugar or salt.

Smoking: A technique for burning certain ingredients to create the desired unique flavor.
