A bar is a place that offers a variety of non-alcoholic and, more specifically, alcoholic drinks. The word “Bar” comes from the Greek word “Baros,” which means “weight.” Here are some common terms that are used in the bar world:

1. Happy Hour

A specific time when the bar offers discounted drinks.

2. House Wine

A type of wine provided by the bar at a more affordable price than other wines. It is usually served by the glass and is a favorite among guests.

3. One for the Road

The last drink a guest has before leaving the bar.

4. Cocktail Party

An event that serves various alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks along with light snacks. People typically hold this party in the late afternoon or early evening.

5. Bar Counter

The flat surface separates the bartender’s area from the guest’s drinking area.

6. On Me

This term refers to the action of putting another person’s drink bill onto the bill of the person who intends to pay for it.

7. Corkage Charge

The bar charges an additional fee for guests who bring their own bottle of spirits/liquor.

8. Angel Shot

A code is used to indicate that a guest is in danger. People often use this term during a date at the bar when one party feels threatened by the other, and they can order an “Angel Shot” to signal for help.

9. On the Rocks

A drink served with ice cubes.

10. Call Drinks

Drinks are ordered by specifying the particular brand or type of alcohol.

11. Neat

A strong alcoholic drink served in a small glass without ice or any other mix-ins.

12. Shot

A small amount of alcohol is typically consumed in one gulp.

13. ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

The percentage that indicates the amount of alcohol content in a beverage.

14. Ale

Beer that ferments at a higher temperature, usually between 18-23°C, allowing the yeast to float and remain at the surface. Ale has a more complex flavor compared to regular beer.

15. Head

This term refers to the foam on the surface of beer, not the “head” of a person.
