origin of bar

A bar is a place that provides various drinks ranging from alcoholic to non-alcoholic. This place is not just a regular place to drink, but also a gathering place to exchange stories. Of course, over time, the architectural design of the bar has also changed, including the choice of drinks offered.

Origin of Bar

The word “Bar” comes from the word “barrier” which is something that separates the bartender and the guest. Before the term “bar”, this place was usually called a “tavern” (Roman), or “pub” (English). At the beginning of the bar, the choice of drinks offered was quite limited, usually only beer, wine, and whiskey because they were easy to obtain.

1800s

The origin of Bar began in England, Pubs became a place to gather to socialize and this place became essential for them. While in America, it is usually called a “Saloon” which developed rapidly after the Industrial Revolution. In its time, the Saloon also had various entertainment such as games, shows, and music. Popular drinks in this era were beer, whiskey, and wine.

1900s

In this era, the United States banned manufacturing and distributing alcoholic beverages. This certainly caused the citizens of the country to experience a shortage of alcoholic beverages because it had become commonplace. Therefore, people established ‘speakeasies,’ hidden bars that continued to offer alcoholic beverages without government supervision. This was still known by many of its visitors, which forced the bartenders to “hide” the alcohol content of the alcoholic beverages they sold. This is where the “Cocktail” was born, namely a drink mixed with soda, syrup, or other alcoholic beverages that looked like ordinary drinks. Cocktails that appeared in this era were Martini, Margarita, and Old Fashioned.

2000s

In the 2000s, America lifted the ban on alcoholic beverages. This did not make Cocktails fade, in fact, more and more variations in appearance and taste developed throughout the world. Bars are also increasingly diverse, ranging from nightclubs, cocktail bars, lounges, and bars that have certain themes to offer a unique experience in enjoying their drinks. Even now there is also a rooftop bar with an infinity pool that offers 360 views of the city.
